Spring is here and Earth Day is around the corner. Earth Day reminds us that we all share this planet. It reminds us that it is our responsibility to take care of it for future generations. It reminds us that there more we can do and inspires us to do better. Read Rockin Green’s tips below on making your home and laundry greener. Happy Spring and Happy Earth Day from your friends at Diaper Jungle!
How can you become greener in your home? Here’s a few things to start with:
1. Clean Green. Use eco-friendly cleaning products like Rockin’ Green, of course.
2. Conserve water. This can be done in many ways like turning off the water when you brush your teeth, taking shorter showers or installing a low-flow toilet.
3. Mail. Opt for online bill pay and online magazine viewing. It’ll save trees like you wouldn’t believe.
4. Green plants. Buy a houseplant as they can rid the air of pollutants and toxins in your home, cleaning up the air you breathe in.
5. Recycle. I hope everyone recycles but for those who don’t – start…NOW.
6. Light bulbs. Even if you change a few of your incandescent light bulbs and exchange them withEnergy Star bulbs, by some estimates we would save enough energy to light up more than 3 million homes for a year!
7. Walk and ride. Whenever you can why not take a bike ride or walk instead to save on gas and emissions. Plus it’s good for the body too!
Laundry detergents and the environment
The laundry process (detergent, washer, dryer) of course impacts the environment, but if you take steps to green your cleaning process, you will do minimal damage to the all-important Mother Earth.
Here are some ways you can save energy when washing and drying your clothes.
· Wash only full loads. It almost takes the same amount of electricity to do a small load as it does a full one.
· Wash on the cold cycle whenever possible as it saves on water heater costs.
· Don’t over soap. Using too much detergent makes your washer work harder and you may have to use more water to re-rinse to remove extra soap.
· For effective drying separate heavy items (towels) and light items (t-shirts, socks, etc).
· Use automatic dryer settings and time. This will help to determine type and size load and help you save energy when using a timed cycle.
· Keep the lint filter clean. Clogged vent = wasted energy.
· Line dry your items (in the springtime sun). This one may be obvious, but it’s so great for your fabrics and it’s free, which is lovely bonus!
