11 Tips for Optimizing Your Web Site
DO use a tag line – It helps define the purpose of the Web site and keywords can be used in it.
DO check for broken links often.
DO NOT use hidden text, such as white lettering on a white background. This is often done to try and add more keywords to your content, but many search engines will penalize for this.
DO make sure no pages are under construction.
DO NOT use non-relevant keywords, such as your competitor’s business name or popular brands of products that you do not sell.
DO make sure your site is up and running all the time.
DO write professional copy (content) for your site, rich with relevant keywords and descriptions.
DO NOT use too many graphics. Search engines can only understand text and using a lot of graphics with very little text will almost certainly affect your ranking.
DO NOT use automatic search engine submission services. The search engines don’t like automatic submission tools and may very well ignore your pages if you use them.
DO design your site with several browsers in mind. It is a common mistake to see web sites that look beautiful when viewed in Internet Explorer but look disastrous when viewed with Netscape or Opera.
DO use your home page to its full potential. If you are leaving it mostly blank with a single link to your store or another more relevant page, or you have a Flash movie there instead, then you are wasting some prime real estate. Impatient visitors may leave before they see what your site is all about, and search engines are left with next to nothing to index.
