Featured Cloth Diaper WAHM: Brenda Boran of Dragonfly Boutique

Q: What Led You to Start Using Cloth Diapers?

A: A deep concern for the environment and the impact our decisions as parents would leave for our children in the future and a concern for the health of their little bodies.

Q: How did you go about making cloth diapers your business?

A: I was a daycare provider for years-it was my way of being able to stay at home with my children and bring in the needed second income. When my children started needing me more and more with school and other activities, I found daycare to be very restricting and my own children were no longer my first priority. I had to find something else to do. Sewing is something my mother taught me when I was young so it came naturally to me and a skill that I thought I could put to use. So I started to make cloth diapers and sell them on E-Bay. It didn't make alot but it was something!

I then decided to take the big plunge into the business and quit taking care of other peoples children and put more focus on my own while I started a cloth diapering business. It's proven to be the biggest challenge I have ever had to face. But it's helping me to achieve my goal as a stay at home mom, putting MY children before others children.

Q: Was starting your business difficult?

A: Financially, YES! We took out a home-equity loan and got all the money I could need and want and then I realized that my dream of being a business owner could become a reality MUCH easier! Then the difficulty of learning the laws, taxes, advertising and finding the clientele and that has been the most challenging.

Q: How do you manage to run a business with small children?

A: With a gated playroom within my work room and tons of patience! I have to be flexible and remember the reason I am doing this type of job: to keep my children's needs as #1 and my job comes in as #2.

Q: What does your home office look like?

A: I have a small corner of the basement that I have gated off and have claimed as my own! I have several shelving units for fabrics and inventory, I have 2 tables for cutting and sewing and I have a little refrigerator for refreshments! And on the other side of my gate is my children's playroom.

Q: What Is The Most Rewarding Thing About Running Your Home Business?

A: I get to be flexible in this job. If my children call from school with an illness, I can drop what I am doing to go and get them. If I want a day off to spend with my babies, I can do that as well. With daycare children, I couldn't do any of those things and many times had to rely on good hearted neighbors to pick my children up for me or watch the daycare children while I took care of my own. It was very stressful!

Q: What new an exciting things can we expect in the future?

A: For my site to be well known in the world of cloth diapers and natural living! I have every intention of making it big and being successful in my endeavors!
