Featured Cloth Diaper WAHM: Kim of Kuddly Kreations

Q: What Led You to Start Using Cloth Diapers?

A: I started using cloth when my daughter was about 9 months old. We had been battling a horrible diaper rash that would not clear up. This had been on going for about 2 months. No matter what medications they gave us it did no good. Determined to figure out a solution for my poor baby's bottom. I started doing research and came across cloth diapers.

Now my first reaction is one most people have. EEEWWW no way not me I won't use cloth. But the more I read, the more I researched and the more I learned. The more I just knew this is what would help my daughter. So I ordered some prefolds and proraps for her. Within 2 weeks her little bottom was healed up without using any type of creams or ointments. We came to the conclusion she was allergic to the perfume in the diapers. From that point out I was hooked and vowed to never use disposables again.

Q: How did you go about making cloth diapers your business?

A: After cloth diapering my daughter for several months. I wanted to move up to something different besides prefolds and proraps. Those were great but I wanted those oh so cute diapers I had seen. While cruising around for different diapers to buy. I found a diaper pattern to make your own. I knew I could sew so I thought why not. After all this would only make cloth diapering that much more fun!! So it went from making my own from a bought pattern. To designing my own pattern with all the features and sizing the store bought didn't have that I wanted. After that a few friends got diapers I made for them. I was encouraged to start selling them. They really loved my diapers and were sure others would too. So here I am almost a year later with my own store. Making and selling diapers while loving what I am doing.

Q: Was starting your business difficult?

A: I wouldn't say it was difficult. More so that it was a long process. With many many hours of work involved. Lots of learning along the way happened while starting my business. It's definately not easy to start up a business. But if you stick with it you will be rewarded in the end.

Q: How do you manage to run a business with small children?

A: This can pose some challenges to running a business from home. You learn to work around your children's schedule. So when they are napping or sleeping. You learn to do your work that requires the most concentration like sewing. When they are up and playing. You learn to do the small prep work. Such as tracing out diapers, cutting material and so forth. However I have also found ways to involve my children in my work. This makes it easier to get things done. For example my daughter loves to help me cut material. So she will hold my fabric in place while I cut. My oldest loves to trace out the patterns. So I allow him do this when he wants. My husband helps me cut out the patterns while he watches TV. This truly has become a family business and we all love it.

Q: What does your home office look like?

A: I don't really have a home office at this point. I mainly work out of a corner of my large living room. I do all my work here so I can be with my children. I have my computer desk, sewing table and several storage units which hold some suppliers. I keep the main items I use in this area. Then I have a storage room upstairs where I keep the rest of my items.

Q: What Is The Most Rewarding Thing About Running Your Home Business?

A: It's so rewarding getting an order, completing that order and then sending them off. Its so great to get those I got my diapers and I love them emails. That makes all the hard work and effort I put into this so worth while. It's the best thing to get pictures of the cute baby in your diaper. To hear compliments and get referrals from happy customers. That has to be the best part of running my own business. Of course though that is second in line to being with my children.
